Help for Arthritis Pain May Come From Milk

Author: Richard Lewis
Arthritis sufferers searching for pain relief may need to look no further than their supermarket's juice section, according to recent research.

For centuries, mothers have been urging their children to drink their milk because it builds strong bones and healthy teeth. And in the 1800s, scientists observed that mothers pass immunity to certain diseases on to their children through their breast milk.

But now there may be another reason for drinking beverages with milk protein: Research shows that milk produced by

hyperimmunized New Zealand cows has anti-inflammatory properties that can provide relief from arthritis pain.

In the U.S., the whey protein milk is found in NuVim, a dietary supplement available in the refrigerated juice sections of select supermarkets and convenience stores. The fruit-flavored drink contains MunePro and Accuflex, two patented micronutrients found in the protein in cow's milk. MunePro enhances the functioning of the immune system. Accuflex helps maintain healthy joints and muscles.

For the six-week study, researchers looked at 31 people whose physicians had diagnosed osteoarthritis in both knees.

The study participants found the most improvement in their ability to perform the activities of daily living, including going up and down stairs, rising from a sitting position, standing, bending to the floor, getting in and out of the car, putting on or taking off socks and shoveling snow.

This could be good news to arthritis sufferers who prefer an alternative to glucosamine or chondroitin for arthritis pain relief. Recently, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that glucosamine, chondroitin and combinations of the two are less effective than they were thought to be.

In addition, NuVim contains vitamins C, E, B-12 and zinc; vitamin A; calcium; and complete protein. It's lactose-free, contains no fat, gluten, caffeine or cholesterol, and is low in calories, carbohydrates and sugar.
