Tummy Tuck Information

Author: Alan Hood

Abdominoplasty is the medical terminology for what most people refer to as a Tummy Tuck.

In this procedure the goal is to flatten the stomach by removing excess skin and fat. The appearance is further improved by the tightening of abdominal muscles.

Length and details of the Tummy Tuck surgery

The length of operation usually runs between 2 to 5 hours.

For this type operation the patient is typically given general anesthesia or local anesthetic with sedation.

Depending on the extent of the surgery a patient may face either an inpatient or outpatient procedure.

Risks and/or complications related to Tummy Tucks

In most Tummy Tuck operations the potential side effects consist of temporary pain, swelling & soreness, numbness, and bruising. In addition there are other associated risks with this procedure that include the risk of blood clots, infection, and bleeding "tucked area". Some patients could encounter slow healing which could result in visible scarring and/or skin loss.

Tummy Tuck recovery time

For most patients the recovery time needed should be between 2 to 4 weeks. Most individuals should be able to return to work after this period. It may be necessarily to avoid strenuous activity for up to 4 to 6 weeks.

The cosmetic aspects of the surgery will take slightly longer with a gradual fading and flattening of a tummy tuck scar taking approximately 3 months to 2 years.

Long-term results of the Tummy Tuck surgery

The procedure is usually permanent with any changes being the result of aging or additional weight gain by the patient.

How much does a Tummy Tuck cost?

The cost for a Tummy Tuck surgery varies with prices in-between $4,200.00 to $7,600.00

Will my insurance cover a Tummy Tuck procedure?

Because a Tummy Tuck is considered an elective procedure, insurance usually will not cover the operation. However in some cases such as gastric bypass surgery a Tummy Tuck is often used to remedy the excess skin due to massive weight loss. In these cases it may be possible to have your health insurance plan pay for part of the cost.
