An Introduction To Military Boarding

Author: Jennifer Bailey

Military schools foster physical and mental growth in a positive environment. Contrary to popular belief, military establishments are not given to exacting standards of discipline using hostile means. The right school helps motivate young minds and shape their future.

Writers like Enid Blyton colored our imagination with her exciting and funny accounts of boarders in St. Clare's and Malory Towers. Military boarding schools do not offer similar 'adventures' but are centers of excellence in every way. They focus on discipline, teamwork and molding young minds, especially those with a desire to join the military forces. Boot camps and military schools are not the same. For defiant teenagers, military schools are not always open.

Boarding schools have many advantages. For parents living in areas with inadequate educational facilities they are a great option. Learning to live away from home and being physically separated from loved ones is no easy task. But the children learn to be independent and adapt to changing environments. The faculty and students often have better interaction, and the variety of academic and extracurricular activities hones individual talents. The schools are often strict, but help prepare students for college life and military service.

Choose the right school suited to the child's needs by conducting extensive research. In the US, there are boys-only and Christian military schools as well. For example, the Army and Navy Academy (Carlsbad, CA), Marine Military Academy (Harlingen, TX) and Fork Union Military Academy (Fork Union, VA) are all boys. St. John's Northwestern Military Academy (Delafield, WI) and Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, VA) are Episcopal and Baptist Christian schools. Admiral Farragut Academy (St.Petersburg, FL) and New York Military Academy (Cornwall on Hudson, NY) are co-ed.
