Let the Sunshine In - Pruning Your Agenda

Author: Jack Wilson

The reason I had time to indulge in that folderal in the description is that I have open spaces in my agenda. I was watching a TV show about gardening and I noticed that the pruners (hows that for a job title?) were taking out tree-size branches that were green and healthy. I wondered why. The pruners obligingly told me that it is to let the sunshine in so that the whole hedge will prosper.

Pruning promotes large, well-flavored fruit. Removing excess buds, though they are healthy, concentrates the nutrients in the remaining ones and results in the best fruit. Same with your agenda; cut out the excess and the remaining will bear the best possible results instead of joining with the others in a mediocre overall product.

Carefully comb through your schedule and see which projects can be put into a category of long term, slow gestation so you can have just a few high-energy activities to concentrate on. Farm out as much as you can so you will be freed to operate on the most dynamic properties. Even then, leave details to detail people and you act in the realm of ideas and action instead of using your energy in sorting papers and putting stamps on letters. Of course, if youre in the business of sorting papers and putting stamps on letters, you will have to think in different directions, but you can still benefit from pruning.

Prunes are associated with regulating bodily functions. Regularity improves the way the whole body operates. So pruning with prunes is a good idea too. Flush out old, unwanted, used up, how shall I put it..., junk.

Most people have an agenda so full they cant find any breathing space. Typically when people prune their gardens or their agendas they get rid of the least productive and least valuable stuff, but they fail to see that they are leaving good stuff that interferes with the health of the garden or the schedule. What you need to do is find the good stuff you can afford to get rid of so the rest of the garden can flourish.

Get rid of the junk too, but remember to open up enough to let the sunshine in. Yall.
