A lot of lines (ie Carnival) give big discounts for early booking (like 6 months in advance). We took a cruise 2 years ago to Mexico for under $600 Canadian each due to early booking and return cruiser discount. Awesome! The most important thing you will do is choose a cruise line. Select a line that fits your personality and how you picture your vacation. Nonstop party and fun: Carnival. Romance: Another line. Expensive relaxation: Windstar, or another line. Of course, you will get romance on Carnival, and Partying on Windstar, but every line specializes in a certain crowd. The average age of Carnival cruisers is, I would guess, about 25-30 years old. Works for me. I have cruised three times and I love Carnival. Honeymooners would love taking Carnival line. Sure, Carnival has mediocre service (you can't sit on deck and expect a drink every 5 minutes -- waiter maybe every 10-15 minutes) and its room service consists of sandwiches (and booze). But frankly when you've been at the bow of the ship with friends until 4am, a BLT never tasted so good. On a cruise with friends last year, there were at least 3 nights when we got back to the cabin, ordered room service, and they all fell asleep before it came, leaving me forced to swill 4 drinks. Sigh! =) SUMMARY: Good overall experience for the money. I recommend the Carnival excursions for first timers to get a safety feel for Mexico, but next time I might book my own tours to get a better value. I give the ship 3 stars because I believe they could do something about the engine rattle and poor drinks, but it seems Carnival is just out to make as much income as they can on and old ship, premium drinks, photos and excursions that they coordinate.
